Aftermath Cast: The Making of a Cinematic Masterpiece

The Czech Republic has long been a popular European production hub, attracting international TV series and feature films to its picturesque landscapes and well-equipped studios. In 2018, the country saw €125m invested in local shoots, with Prague being a hotspot for productions. This year, Taika Waititi's wartime drama Jojo Rabbit doubled Germany in Prague, while Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home filmed scenes in Liberec.

Keira Knightley stars alongside Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgård in the critically acclaimed film Aftermath, which tells the story of a family's struggle to cope with the devastating aftermath of World War II. Director Kent aimed to recreate the war-torn city of Hamburg on set, using a combination of practical effects and clever camera work.

To achieve this, Kent and his team filmed interiors at a spacious house in Hamburg itself, which was transformed into the home of Rachael and her husband. The property's wealth was reflected through its opulent decorations, while also providing a functional space for the crew to work in. Meanwhile, exteriors were shot at a location outside Prague, where production designer Sonja Klaus brought the city's rubble-filled streets to life.

The film's set design team built pavements, cobblestones, and shop facades into the street, with extensive rubble deposited around the factory location. This attention to detail was crucial in capturing the devastation caused by Allied forces during a sustained bombing campaign in 1943.

To service their shoot, Kent worked with local production company Sirena Film, who provided valuable expertise and resources. The deserted sugar factory in Prague and a city street stripped of its municipal features were transformed into war-damaged Hamburg, giving the film an authentic look and feel.

With its talented cast, meticulous set design, and commitment to authenticity, Aftermath is a cinematic masterpiece that is sure to leave audiences moved and impressed.
